Recent update on assisting neurodivergent employees
A recent Government-backed report has highlighted the important role employers can play in supporting neurodivergent employees at work. One of the key findings was that there is often uncertainty, both for employers and employees, about what support may be most effective for a particular individual, as neurodivergence can affect people in different ways.
The report emphasises that employers should not wait for a formal diagnosis before considering workplace support. Instead, where an employee indicates that they are experiencing difficulties or requests adjustments, employers should take proactive steps to explore possible solutions without unnecessary delay. The report also recommends responding promptly to requests for reasonable adjustments, with a suggested timeframe of around two weeks.
Importantly, the report encourages employers to adopt an individualised approach. Rather than making assumptions about what support may be needed, managers should have open discussions with employees to understand the adjustments and working arrangements that would help them perform at their best.
Clear processes and early engagement can help create a more inclusive working environment and reduce barriers to success for neurodivergent employees.
