Andrew Katz to speak at Swedish seminar | 17 May 2018
On Thursday 17 May 2018, Andrew Katz, CEO and Technology Partner at Moorcrofts, will speak at an Open Science Seminar at the University of Skövde.
As data is generated at an unparalleled rate, the opportunities for exploring new areas of research are also increasing. However, the ability to use that data is subject to a number of challenges, ranging from file formats (including patent issues), copyright and database right restrictions, protection of computer-generated works, restrictions on text and data-mining activities, and requirements imposed by the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
Andrew’s talk entitled ‘challenges and opportunities related to data portability in the context of open science’ will provide an overview of the challenges these legal aspects currently raise, a review of current initiatives in the EU and beyond, and suggest proposals aimed at achieving a fair balance between the legitimate interests of researchers and rights-holders, as well as introducing some misunderstood benefits of the research exemption in the GDPR regime.
