Andrew Katz to speak at FOSDEM | 3 & 4 February 2024
Andrew Katz, Moorcrofts Head of Technology and IP and CEO of Orcro, will speak at FOSDEM 2024 on Sunday 3 February, in the vibrant city of Brussels, Belgium, at the Solbosch campus of the ULB (Université Libre de Bruxelles).
Andrew’s talk
In a world where technology often outpaces legislation, Andrew’s talk entitled: Using code generated by AI: issues, misconceptions, and solutions will tackle pressing questions, including:
- What are the copyright issues with ingestion of training data, configuration and transfer of models, and the generation and use of code?
- Can GPL code inadvertently be incorporated into your non-GPL codebase?
- Who owns the copyright in generated code?
As a legal expert specialising in open source and AI, Andrew will provide insights and consider potential solutions.

Widely recognised as the best conference of its kind in Europe, FOSDEM is a two-day event organised by volunteers to promote the widespread use of free and open source software. It is a free and non-commercial event organised by the community for the community. The goal is to provide free and open source software developers and communities a place to meet to:

A bit of history
In 2000, Raphael Bauduin organised a small meeting for open-source developers in Belgium called ‘Open Source Developers’ European Meeting’ (OSDEM). The event evolved into FOSDEM, covering a wide spectrum of free and open-source software projects and hosting over 5000 developers annually.
About Andrew
Andrew has been described as the UK’s leading free and open-source lawyer and is described by Chambers and Partners (2023) as ‘one of the world’s leading legal experts on open source and open hardware licensing’.
In 2020, he was nominated as the Open Hardware expert for the winning team for the European Union’s flagship policy impact study on Open Source software and Open Hardware. He also drafted the popular Solderpad Open Hardware licence, and is on the core drafting team of the CERN Open Hardware Licence.
